The Assistant Editor will have particular responsibility for the Journal’s reviews section. They will assist the Reviews Editor, Dr Marco Longobardo, to commission review essays and book reviews, and marshal them through the publication process. This will include communicating with the authors of book reviews and book publishers, and checking accepted reviews for compliance with the Journal’s style guide. The position is unpaid.

The scope of the Journal is broad and it publishes papers on international humanitarian legal issues including but not limited to: the law of international and non-international armed conflict; the protection of human rights during times of armed conflict; international refugee law; military law; disaster law; the law of post-conflict reconstruction; and international criminal law.

The Editors-in-Chief of the Journal are Russell Buchan (University of Sheffield, UK), Emily Crawford (University of Sydney, Australia) and Rain Liivoja (University of Queensland, Australia).

The Journal is now accepting contributions for Volume 12(1), which will be published in June 2021. This edition will focus on the theme of ‘recovery and international law’, and we welcome articles on this topic, which we define broadly to include law reform in the wake of major humanitarian incidents, reparations, transitional justice and post-conflict reconciliation and reconstruction.

The Journal publishes full-length articles (of no more than 10,000 words excluding footnotes), shorter commentaries and case notes (4,000 words), and book reviews (1,500 words). The Journal welcomes contributions from academics, government and non-governmental organisation officials, military personnel, and practitioners working in the humanitarian field more generally.

Contributions must adhere to the OSCOLA referencing style and follow the Journal’s Instructions for Authors. For contributions to be considered for publication in Volume 12(2) they must be submitted no later than the 31 December 2020.

The Journal seeks to explore the application of international law to humanitarian crises and, more specifically, to examine the role that this legal framework plays in protecting human security during times of emergency.

Thus, the scope of the Journal is broad and covers:

  • the law of international and non-international armed conflict;
  • the protection of human rights during times of armed conflict and other public emergencies;
  • international refugee law;
  • military law;
  • disaster law;
  • the law of post-conflict reconstruction; and
  • international criminal law.

The Journal publishes full-length articles (8,000-10,000 words), short notes (such as comments and case notes of around 4,000 words), book reviews (500–1,500 words), and book review essays (2,000–4,000 words). The Journal welcomes contributions from academics and practitioners alike.

Contributions must adhere to the OSCOLA referencing style. For contributions to be considered for publication in Volume 10(2), they must be submitted no later than 30 June 2019.

The Journal will implement an online submission system in 2019. Meanwhile, please submit papers by emailing them to editors@jihls.net. Please send all proposals to review books to reviews@jihls.net.

Expressions of Interest – Reviews Editor https://jihls.net/2018/10/reviews-editor/ Thu, 11 Oct 2018 01:00:29 +0000 https://jihls.net/?p=1 Read more]]> JIHLS is seeking a Reviews Editor to join its editorial team. The Reviews Editor is responsible for the Journal’s Reviews section, which has previously focused on book reviews, but could be expanded to include other types of reviews as appropriate. In consultation with the Editors-in-Chief, the Reviews Editor will set the direction for the Reviews section, identify materials for review, recruit reviewers, correspond with publishers and reviewers, and edit reviews prior to publication.  The Reviews Editor’s term will be negotiated between the successful candidate and the Editors-in-Chief but will begin as soon as the successful candidate can start.For the avoidance of doubt, the Reviews Editor position is unpaid.  To apply, please send a brief statement explaining your interest in the role, what you would bring to the Journal, and prior editing/publishing experience, to r.liivoja@uq.edu.au by 31 October 2018.
